Biological control of locusts and grasshoppers.

چکیده
Control of grasshoppers and locusts has traditionally relied on synthetic insecticides, and for emergency situations this is unlikely to change. However, a growing awareness of the environmental issues associated with acridid control as well as the high costs of emergency control are expanding the demand for biological control. In particular, preventive, integrated control strategies with early interventions will reduce the financial and environmental costs associated with large-scale plague treatments. The recent development of effective oil formulations of Metarhizium anisopliae spores in Africa, Australia, and Brazil opens new possibilities for environmentally safe control operations. Metarhizium biopesticide kills 70%-90% of treated locusts within 14-20 days, with no measurable impact on nontarget organisms. An integrated pest management strategy, with an emphasis on the use of Metarhizium, that incorporates rational use of chemical pesticides with biological options such as the microsporidian Nosema locustae and the hymenopteran egg parasitoids Scelio spp., has become a realistic option.

18 Development of a Myco-insecticide for Biological Control of Locusts in Southern Africa
The LUBILOSA (Lutte Biologique contre les Locusts et les Sauteriaux) Programme has been working on the development of a myco-insecticide for the control of locusts and grasshoppers for the past 9 years. The resulting myco-insecticide product (trade name Green Muscle) is based on an oil formulation of aerial conidia of the fungal entomopathogen, Metarhizium anisopliae var. acridum. Field testing...
متن کاملMonitoring Desert Locusts in the Middle East: An Overview
Desert Locusts, Schistocerca gregaria (Forskal), are the most dangerous of locust species. Under favorable environmental conditions, a few solitary individuals can dramatically multiply, form large swarms able to migrate great distances, and threaten agriculture over a large part of Africa, the Middle East and Southwest Asia. There have been six plagues of Desert Locusts this century, one of wh...
متن کاملFirst Record of Fusarium verticillioides as an Entomopathogenic Fungus of Grasshoppers
Fusarium verticillioides (Saccardo) Nirenberg (Ascomycota: Hypocreales) is the most common fungus reported on infected corn kernels and vegetative tissues, but has not yet been documented as being entomopathogenic for grasshoppers. Grasshoppers and locusts represent a large group of insects that cause economic damage to forage and crops. Tropidacris collaris (Stoll) (Orthoptera: Acridoidea: Rom...
متن کاملBaits at the dawn of chemical pest control: A historical overview
© 2006. Research Information Ltd. All rights reserved DOI: 10.1564/17jun04 Abstract Insecticidal baits have been used to control grasshoppers and locusts since the 1880s. After the peak in the 1940s1950s, they were increasingly replaced by more economical dusts and sprays. Nowadays, baits are used on a regular basis in North America to control rangeland grasshoppers and Mormon crickets. A typic...
